Geographical information

The city of Karlovac is located in central Croatia, 56 km southwest of Zagreb and 130 km northeast of the city of Rijeka, and is the administrative center of Karlovac County.

Karlovac is the city where the most important railway and road routes connect the capital Zagreb with Rijeka, Split and other parts of Croatia. In fact, Karlovac has always been a city center that connects Europe with the Adriatic ports, as evidenced by the old historic roads of Karolina, Jozefina, and Lujzijana, thanks to which Karlovac has developed into an important commercial and transport center.

The excellent geo-traffic position is also evidenced by the distance of Karlovac from some of the major European cities. The distance from Karlovac to Ljubljana is 104 km air distance, from Karlovac to Sarajevo 386 km, to Budapest 400 km and to the Austrian capital, Vienna – 410 km. The city of Karlovac is the administrative, political, cultural and sports center of Karlovac County which is divided into 5 major cities (Karlovac, Duga Resa, Ogulin, Slunj, and Ozalj), and a total of 17 municipalities.

The city of Karlovac itself consists of 18 neighborhoods, the most prominent of which are: Stari Centar – which is the oldest gentlemanly city district and the seat of the leaders who built the town of Karlovac. Borlin is the district where Karlovac brewery is located and which is one of the most beautiful districts in Karlovac. In addition to being the most beautiful, it is known as the district with the cleanest water which the brewery uses to make beer. The neighborhood of Dubovac is located along with the old town of Dubovac, which was ruled by princes Zrinski and Frankopans in the 15th and 16th centuries. A neighborhood called “The Star” is a settlement of a specific appearance in the form of a six-pointed star.

Inside the Star is the Church of the Holy Trinity, which is also the oldest building in the city.
